Anthony Bourdain & Mark Lanegan sharing a meal and more

Oscuridad roquera de altos vuelos al estilo Seattle. Quería hacer una hora de televisión absolutamente saturada, con con Mark Lanegan y su música, dijo alguna vez Bourdain, quien se pronunció fan de el ex Screaming Trees, con quien quería fumar marihuana legalmente escuchando sus canciones. El programa muestra un lado más mordaz de Lanegan durante su aparición en el episodio del programa “Seattle”. “El hecho de que nos hayas visto en el programa”, le dijo a Bourdain, “me hizo darme cuenta de que te has quedado sin cosas para hablar”. Los cuatro minutos finales del episodio, en los que Bourdain demostró cómo forjar un porro de forma correcta al ritmo de la canción de Lanegan, “Strange Religion”, sigue siendo una de las mejores secuencias de cierre en la historia del programa.

Dead Combo - Odeon Hotel (Produced By Alain Johannes)

Dead Combo es una banda portuguesa formada en el 2003 por TóTrips y Pedro Gonçalves. Cuentan con una larga trayectoria audiovisual que a partir de influencias pasadas de Fado, Jazz, Rock y Spaghetti Western han logrado generar un estilo vanguardista e inconfundible. El dúo alcanzó mayor popularidad tras su participación en el capítulo Lisboa del programa "Sin Reservas" de Anthony Bourdain en el año 2012. Su nuevo álbum, titulado "Odeon Hotel" fue producido por Alain Johannes y cuenta con la participación de Mark Lanegan en el tema “I Know, I Alone”, una muestra perfecta de su nacionalidad portuguesa y la universalidad existente en la música de la banda.

Pedazo de concierto, sin dudarlo el mejor registro en vivo de la banda. A disfrutar

Lanegan and Dulli both remained on stage the entire time, and there wasn’t a single song where either one was silent vocally. When Lanegan was singing lead on a song, Dulli would have some background parts to sing, and vice versa. And on occasion they would trade leads, as on “I Was in Love with You.” This is the one song on Saturnalia where Lanegan is not present, but on stage, he sings most of the leads and Dulli takes some of it later. The best shared leads were saved for the encore, however – the old Twilight Singers tune “Papillon” found Dulli inserting a line from Steve Miller’s “The Joker” (in an apparent acknowledgement of his smoking on stage in a city where smoking indoors in public places is illegal), followed by Lanegan inserting a line from the even older Screaming Trees chestnut “Shadow of the Season.”

Uniquely interpreted covers are always a part of any show Dulli plays, so we got the aforementioned “Live With Me” along with a Lanegan-sung cover of Jose Gonzalez’ “Down the Line,” with Lanegan extracting all the blues out of the song that his gravelly voice can muster.

The entirety of Saturnalia was performed, with few words spoken between songs. Lanegan is typically silent between songs on stage, or as Mike put it, he’s “all business.” Some of this vibe has rubbed off on Dulli, who used to be far more talkative with the audience. But all that means is more music. And given the shorter set times with a total of four bands performing that night, the twenty-song set split between new songs, solo Lanegan tunes and Twilight Singers material was quite generous. And satisfying.

Mark Lanegan - Bubblegum

Uno de los mejores trabajos de Mark Lanegan

En contadas ocasiones me encuentro con discos donde basta con el primer arreglo para darnos cuenta que estamos ante algo grande, no tan sólo evaluable por su impacto sobre las masas (como el recordado Nevermind de Nirvana), sino más bien por el poderío de su contenido y la forma de ejecusión...sin importar el número de portadas o el lugar en listas musicales (que mejor ejemplo que nuestro querido Dust de Screaming Trees).

    Y es que, Here Comes That Weird Chill (EP) no fue solo un certero desvio en la ruta en solitario seguida por Lanegan tras el quiebre de Screaming Trees sino que marcó el nacimiento de un nuevo concepto bajo el nombre de Mark Lanegan Band. Bubblegum se alza como aquel disco de blues moderno que Mark siempre tuvo en su interior, y que tras sus devaneos con QOTSA, sale por fin a la luz.

El primer EP de Mark Lanegan Band

El 2003 la calma acotumbrada en los trabajos previos de Lanegan llega a un stop (temporal) para dar acción al nuevo concepto: Mark Lanegan Band.

Al parecer, sus roces en QOTSA se hicieron sentir. El apoyo instrumental y ambiental de sus colegas en este disco nos trae algo más crudo y agresivo, sin perder la serenidad de la profunda voz del ex Screaming Trees.

Dentro de la gran variedad de personajes que aportan al disco (ver en Bubblegum), es una obligación destacar a Alain Johannes como el hombre capaz de confluir toda la energia creativa a traves de su trabajo como productor, ingeniero, mezclador, multiinstrumentista y guitarrista del disco. A su vez, Natasha se encarga de aportar con su bella voz en los toques de coros.

Para los que conocemos a este "Señor del Rock" y entendemos algo de musica, podremos darnos cuenta de que estamos ante algo único.
Previo al disco "Whiskey for the Holy Ghost" lanzado en 1993 en Europa se realizaron estas sesiones en algun estudio de Seatle, WA durante 1991. Solo sabemos que además de Lanegan, también participo Mike Johnson en guitarra.
